Lecturer in Film (Cinematography)

We are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Film (Cinematography) to join our outstanding team of educators, practitioners and researchers.

The role will be based at the Farnham campus in Surrey and will report directly to the Programme Director for Film.

UCA is seeking to recruit a dynamic and innovative educator with specialist expertise in cinematography. We are looking for a candidate who will ideally have significant professional experience within the film or television industries together with experience of teaching in higher education, including curriculum development aligned with contemporary professional practice.

As Lecturer in Film (Cinematography), you will have proven knowledge and experience of camera, lighting and visual storytelling. You will be confident teaching both the creative and technical aspects of filmmaking, supporting students in developing professional production skills alongside a strong understanding of cinematic language. Experience of current digital production technologies, contemporary workflows and collaborative production practice is essential.

You will play a key role in delivering teaching across the BA (Hons) Film Production and MA Filmmaking programmes, while also contributing to related courses across the School where appropriate. Alongside teaching, you will coordinate elements of the cinematography curriculum, supporting sessional staff, organising workshops, study visits and specialist learning activities, coordinating assessment, and helping students develop the professional knowledge, confidence and technical expertise required for careers in the screen industries.

You will have a good honours degree, ideally supported by a postgraduate qualification, together with significant professional experience and an up-to-date understanding of contemporary developments in filmmaking, cinematography and the wider creative industries.

We enable our students to innovate through projects that inspire and challenge. The first year focuses on building fundamental abilities in both analogue and digital media. Our creative classes in typography and visual language are supported with theoretical and contextual content, as well as developing research, analytical and critical thinking skills. 

We are seeking a Lecturer in Graphic Design with a strong foundation in contemporary visual communication. The ideal candidate will have the expertise to teach advanced conceptual and technical skills across digital branding, editorial design, illustration, and UI/UX. While core graphic design proficiency is essential, we are particularly interested in candidates who can bridge traditional design principles with emerging technologies. The role requires a demonstrated interest or experience in motion graphics, as well as the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the creative workflow, Virtual Reality (VR), and other immersive or interactive media. 

The role requires initiative, strong organisational skills, and the ability to work effectively within a cross-cultural academic environment. A master’s degree is essential. Experience of teaching in UK Higher Education is desirable, but we welcome applications from candidates with equivalent teaching, professional or international experience. Fluency in English is required. 

A PGCert in Higher Education, HEA Fellowship, or equivalent professional recognition is desirable. Where a successful candidate does not already hold this, they will be expected to complete the relevant qualification or recognition route within the first two years of appointment, with institutional support and funding provided.
